Q&A
How wide spread is mental illness in Canada?
Mental illness has reached epidemic levels in Canada.
- 20% of Canadians suffer from mental health conditions – only 20% will receive care
- 8% will experience a major depression
- 12% will experience disability due to an anxiety disorder
- 80% of Canadians have friends, family or colleagues with a mental illness
Is the demand for mental health care being met?
Wait times for mental health services in public health care facilities are long. The demand for service far outweighs the available supply, especially through public health programs. Most services which are supported by the Ontario government are delivered in institutions such as hospitals. In private practice, only psychiatrists, (which are medical doctors), may bill OHIP. Service from Psychologists and Social Workers, outside of government-supported institutions is not covered under the public health system.
Where can people find the help they need?
A lot of people who are dealing with mental health issues do not know where to turn. Often, when looking for help, people consult their family physician or GP. However, GPs are not mental health specialists and may only provide limited help. Complicating matters is the shortage of psychiatrists. Long wait times (up to two years!) often result in further deterioration to a person’s condition, family situation and professional life. Private care is the wise alternative.
How do we address the stigma associated with mental illness?
The stigma associated with mental health is rooted in ignorance. At the Clinic, we do not believe that stigma should stand in the way – we see mental health issues in the same way as physical health. In fact, many “physical” conditions are very closely related to our emotional state.
Are services at The Clinic covered by health insurance?
The Clinic is a private facility. Fees for service are not covered by OHIP but may be covered under a private or corporate health plan. Please check with your insurer or HR department for details.
